          Lennie Tristano was one of the most radical voices in the jazz of the late 1940s and early 1950s.

          Called "the mystery man of jazz, a blind pianist with a reputation as a pedagogue who rarely performed in public during the last 20 years of his career," by Rolling Stone's Robert Palmer, Tristano was responsible for a number of groundbreaking jazz innovations.

          He performed and recorded the first "free jazz." He was the first to use overdubbing and tape manipulation in recording.
